What Will I Be Doing?

PHP Developers have the following responsibilities:

Code Analysis
You must conduct a rigorous analysis of the website or webpage requirements. This involves a brainstorming session with a development team to either come up with ideas for a new site/page or a complete revamp of an existing one. Then you’ll need to determine the feasibility of each idea before identifying the best way to proceed. You’re also expected to offer details on the site’s features and functionalities.

Development & Database Optimisation
The next step is to use your technical knowledge to develop the site/page as per the final plan. What you create must be dynamic and include the advantages of PHP Script. A PHP Developer is expected to develop a portal with an optimised database.

Testing
You have to test the site/page for every conceivable error and get feedback from the client. Once you have located errors, debug them and finalise the site/page. After receiving approval, implement the webpage or host the site online.

Maintenance
A PHP Developer’s job is not done when the website/webpage has been published! You must update it continuously and alter functionalities from time to time to improve visibility and user experience.

Is There Anything Else?

PHP Developers usually work Monday-Friday, 9-5 hours although you may have to work longer hours for an agency. Irregular hours could occur when meeting deadlines or helping clients in different time zones.
Self-employment in this field is an increasingly common occurrence as all you need is a high-quality computer, fast Internet connection and the necessary skills. Unless you’re asked to wear formal attire when meeting clients, casual dress is typical. You may have to travel to meet clients occasionally.

PHP Developer Career Path

Obviously, you’ll need to show evidence of previous PHP experience. An increasing number of employers will only hire candidates with a BA in Computer Science or a related field such as Web Programming. Look for a Bachelor’s Degree that includes courses such as Computing Architecture, Data Structures & Algorithms, Operating Systems and Quantitative Reasoning.

If you work in an agency or technical organisation, you may receive the majority of your training from experienced developers. In small companies, you’ll probably have to learn on your own time.
If you want to distinguish yourself from other applicants, consider a Postgraduate qualification. For example, the Fitzwilliam Institute offers an accredited Postgraduate Diploma in PHP & MySQL. You can study online and earn while you learn.

PHP Developer Salary

If you lack experience and work for a small company, the starting salary could be in the €30,000-€40,000 per annum range. As you move up the ladder, the typical annual salary will be in the €55,000-€65,000. In-demand Senior PHP Developers could command a salary of up to €90,000 a year.

What Are The Good Points?

There is no shortage of work available to PHP Developers as most companies require web development work at some point. Organisations with a constant need for this type of work have an in-house team, but if you decide to work freelance, you should have your pick of jobs.
If you have ZEND experience, you can command an extremely high salary as such individuals are still in short supply. PHP remains one of the top languages for start-ups and small businesses and is an excellent choice for advertising and design, so these niches will offer high starting salaries or provide plenty of freelance work.

What Are The Bad Points?

There is a lot of pressure attached as your skills can make or break a company’s website. You will need a considerable amount of experience if you wish to be hired by a major firm and while there aren’t that many high-quality PHP Developers around, the best are truly exceptional so competition can be fierce.
Is a Career as a PHP Developer Right For Me?
To become a successful PHP Developer, you must possess the following:

  • Excellent knowledge of the basic PHP or web server exploits along with their solutions.
  • Total understanding of PHP’s fully synchronous behaviour.
  • The ability to integrate a variety of data sources and databases into a single system.
  • Knowledge of SQL/NoSQL databases.
  • The capacity to understand accessibility and security compliance.
  • Proficiency when it comes to code versioning tools.
